YEAR BUILT: | 1878 |
LOCATION: | 157 McKinley Avenue (p.k.a. Forest Street (not avenue)) at Charles Street, southeast corner. Jamestown, New York USA |
DESIGNED BY: | L.P. Coates |
BUILT BY / CONTRACTOR: | Daniel Winsor |
STATUS: | Building still standing and currently home of the Iglesia Pentecostal Church (but see below) . Replaced in 1903 by a new building located nearby at 30 Charles Street that was also called Branch School No. 5 but later known as Charles Street School constructed 1902-03. |
POINTS OF INTEREST: | Some familiar with the structure believed it to have originally been a church. I found an interesting article which relays what seems to have been a common practice back then of using school buildings for church services on Sunday. The 1948 City of Jamestown, New York Directory has 157 McKinley listed as the Betty Weakland Chapel. |
